Final Journal: Lord of the Flies

As i continued reading this book, darkness was still the biggest theme i could notice. It gets to the point where you can see and feel the chaos about to hit, but you never know when. The tension could be seen with "humiliating tears running from the corner of each eye" (pg. 140). The fear and evil came into effect as soon as word got out that the beast was among them. The kids weren't "scared so much as paralyzed, (pg. 135) when they saw the beast in person for the first time. It was everything that represented death with the head of a dead pig with flies flying all over. They expected the adults to solve the problems, but since no parents were on the island, Jack and Ralph were the next people to make everything better. The fear led the younger kids to siding sides with either Jack or Ralph creating a new conflict. Since the younger kids didn't know better they went with their human nature, which was to go with the person who was feeding them. Fear can lead to people making the wrong decisions and distort wrong from right. Even though fear was what made many decisions on this island, the competition between Ralph and Jack on who was the better leader led to many decisions being made. The decision of "going up the mountain to look or the beast" (pg 131) was a decision made by Jack and Ralph forced by who was brave enough to go find out if the beast was real. The fear and desperation hit its breaking point when Simon was the first killed on the island by his peers who onced he called friends. There were certain things these kids couldn't have avoided like the younger kids picking the side that feeds them, but the murders of Simon and Piggy could have been avoided. Fear makes people do some crazy things.

Summative Journal -picked journal # 2-

Dear Journal,
By week 2 i have gotten deeper into the book and am getting a better understanding of this novel. In the journal prior to this one i mentioned the boys' innocence and how the reality of the situation they were in hadn't sunk in yet. It got to the point now that the boys have noticed that in order to be rescued or have a chance at least, they need to stay alive. The boys got together and with the orders from Ralph got to work in various jobs that would help each person survive. Some would keep the fire lit on the top of the mountain while others would hunt, gather and build shelters. The time has come where the reader starts understanding each character better and can predict what they are worthy of doing. Ralph seems to be the leader, the boy to turn to for any problems, while Jack seems to just be overally obsessed with hunting a pig. Simon on the other hand that is known to be the biggest kid there is showing us a side we hadn't seen from him before. For example going into the jungle by himself gives us the impression that he's hiding something from the rest of the boys. A different side of each kid is coming out now that they are getting hungry and are realizing they are stuck on the island for a long time. I don't think these kids are bad kids with bad intentions but hunger and the mean of survival will start kicking in making staying alive the most important goal. Selfish actions and betrayal will start to arise out of pure human nature. The conflict of the situation they are in will change these kids dramatically and start acting like emotionless animals. Since they have no one to tell them what they are doing is wrong, they won't know what wrong is from right. Groups will start forming if Ralph doesn't take control and people will be singled out just how Piggy is starting to be. Piggy always seemed to be singled out or different from everyone else and not just cause he was fat but even with something like him being "the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow." (Pg. 67) Anything is starting to set off these kids even when Ralph would say, "We need shelters," Jack would scream back furious, "Are you accusing?" Fingers are being pointed and these once polite humble boys are being engulfed by the wild. I think this journal was better because even though i still gave a summary of what is going on in the book i provided evidence and examples to support my ideas. I added in some deeper thoughts on what is happening to these kids and some predictions of what could go wrong. Like for example the title of the book is coming into play more and more every chapter because Ralph seems like the Lord of the Flies, because right now he is the chief and the flies could be all the kids. Flies also are around death so with these conotation and denotation meanings could mean Ralph is the kid in charge of all these kids that are losing their minds and are slowly being taken over by someone who isn't them, perhaps by the devil. At this point i don't know yet and all i can do is predict and try to find the deeper meaning.

You are giving a plot summary. I need you to move beyond that. You need to connect ot questions, bring in connections etc. Look to the questions and go deeper.

For example going into the jungle by himself gives us the impression that he's hiding something from the rest of the boys. This week we learned what denotation and conotation were and applied it in our discussions finding the literal meanings of words and other meanings we might comprehend. Can't wait to get back to reading !!!

Movie Analysis Summative

The movie i picked was "The Dark Knight" because it's a movie that everyone is familiar to and is also a great movie with many examples of darkness. Batman is a man/hero that tries to eliminate evil and the darkness that is alive everyday in his city. This movie had so many aspects of darkness starting with the main villain, The Joker, who in my opinion made the movie. The way he acted and laughed made him look ruthless and demonic. The way he made Batman choose between people's deaths was the raw darkness that we were looking for. We think choosing between one person's death and another person's death would be one of the hardest things to do. The Joker would turn horrible events into a game. Another component that makes this movie the definition of darkness because most scenes are filmed at night adding an extra effect of death and darkness. Every decision the Joker made impacted me making me see The Joker as a man who really has no soul and is capable of doing anything. In the movie he is so demonic that he looks and acts like a man who should go to a mental facility. He would do things that a normal human wouldn't even think of doing because it was just savage and wrong. The trailer we chose shows what we are talking about and shows the examples we have written about perfectly. The EQ i have chosen is "What allows some individuals to take a stand against prejudice/oppression while others choose to participate in it?" I believe the difference between someone who takes part of it and one that stands up against it has to do with many different reasons. The people who usually get dragged into evil usually have nothing to lose or have gone through a terrible tragedy that makes them believe revenge is the only way out of their depression. For example Harvey in this movie, the man who was in love with Batman's Ex and also who was working with Batman to stop the Joker originally turns evil when his love is killed. By blaming Batman for her death he has someone to unleash his anger and sadness too vulnerable to the Joker's plans. Batman on the other hand has experienced a life of depression and believes that no one else should suffer the way he did so he fights crime to prevent that in anyones' life. I think to avoid being dragged into evil you have to be strong enough to avoid it and remain a good person. Another movie that affected me was the trailer for "the Road." The Road was the movie about the son and father travelling around a destructed Earth filled with wandering people avoiding the cannibals who survive by eating other humans. It impacted me because i can't even imagine eating a human it's just not imaginable to me. The different variety of darkness seen in these movies and life is just mind-boggling. I think the darkness can be avoided, but is also a part of everyone's life and you can't avoid it.

Thank you, Miguel Bustamante

response

It is sad that darkness will always exisit. Why do you think for some that the absence of light will always exisit? DO you not think they may never find a glimmer or a ray of hope? Why has society/humanity turned/existed this way? Can you bring in some more specific examples to help back up your writing. Overall you have good insight, I would just like to see you dig a little deeper.
