Final Journal: Lord of the Flies

As i continued reading this book, darkness was still the biggest theme i could notice. It gets to the point where you can see and feel the chaos about to hit, but you never know when. The tension could be seen with "humiliating tears running from the corner of each eye" (pg. 140). The fear and evil came into effect as soon as word got out that the beast was among them. The kids weren't "scared so much as paralyzed, (pg. 135) when they saw the beast in person for the first time. It was everything that represented death with the head of a dead pig with flies flying all over. They expected the adults to solve the problems, but since no parents were on the island, Jack and Ralph were the next people to make everything better. The fear led the younger kids to siding sides with either Jack or Ralph creating a new conflict. Since the younger kids didn't know better they went with their human nature, which was to go with the person who was feeding them. Fear can lead to people making the wrong decisions and distort wrong from right. Even though fear was what made many decisions on this island, the competition between Ralph and Jack on who was the better leader led to many decisions being made. The decision of "going up the mountain to look or the beast" (pg 131) was a decision made by Jack and Ralph forced by who was brave enough to go find out if the beast was real. The fear and desperation hit its breaking point when Simon was the first killed on the island by his peers who onced he called friends. There were certain things these kids couldn't have avoided like the younger kids picking the side that feeds them, but the murders of Simon and Piggy could have been avoided. Fear makes people do some crazy things.
